Similarities Between Basketball and Volleyball

Although basketball and volleyball are two totally different sports, and have many altering rules and tactics on how the games are played, there are some distinct similarities in both of the sports.

The first similarity between basketball and volleyball is swatting in basketball and spiking and volleyball. Swatting in basketball is when a layup is put up by a player and the defender jumps up and blocks the shot with their hand with a lot of power. Spiking in volleyball uses the same motion that players use when swatting in basketball. The players contact the ball with extreme force using their hand to either earn a point in volleyball or reject points in basketball.

Another similarity between a component in basketball and volleyball is blocking. In basketball, blocking a shot prevents the other team from scoring a point, just as in volleyball blocking is used to reject the opponent's spike which is one of the main ways teams score in volleyball.

The next similarity is the defensive stance used in both the sports. Lateral movement, quickness and being in a low position with the knees bent are key in the two sports. Having a strong base with arms that are ready for any move create for a benefit in basketball and volleyball.

Lastly, there are many very successful professional basketball players who have experience playing volleyball as well. I believe playing volleyball is helpful for improving lateral movement, vertical jump height, quickness and more. The following are a few examples of professional basketball players have a lot of experience with volleyball as well:

  • Wilt Chamberlain
  • Ella Delle Donne
  • Greg Lee
  • Chase Budinger
  • Joel Embiid
